2010 Finals Day – Sunday 18 July 2010 Beaconsfield Tennis Club held its Championships Finals Day on Sunday 18th July, with matches in all age categories starting in earnest at 9am and continuing to entertain an audience of family, friends and club members until after 5pm. Supporters were fortified by a selection of home bakes and a BBQ duly followed by strawberries and cream. A bar was on hand for refreshments, and when the sun came out in the afternoon it saw a significant increase in its sale of Pimms! Later, Emily combined with her mother Jackie to retain the ladies doubles title with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Roselle Beard and Heather Thomas, and she was runner-up with Steve Doyle in the mixed doubles, which was won by defending champions Josh Blattner and Rachel Doyle 6-4,6-3. For the best overall performance throughout the championships, Emily also won the Howard Naish Trophy. In a repeat of last year’s mens final, Andrew Johnson retained his title against Matt Fairbairn, but only after what turned into a battle of attrition. Andrew eventually won the deciding championship tie-break to win 6-4, 6-7, 10-7. Combining with Paul Chapman, Andrew also won the mens doubles against the new pairing of Josh Blattner and Owen Bennett 6-3, 6-2. In the longest match of the day, Bill Wright and Roselle Beard won an epic struggle in the veterans mixed doubles, needing a championship tie-break to beat Sekhar Pillai and Heather Thomas 7-6, 2-6, 12-10. Bethany Fairbairn repeated her sucess from the previous year winning the U15 singles, U18 singles, doubles and mixed titles. Nick Reynolds was also a multiple winner taking the U13 singles and the U13 and U15 doubles titles. Ellie Gill, Matthew Fairbairn, Will Taylor and his sister Susannah, Anna Carter-Roberts and Owen Bennett all took two titles each. The club has welcomed a large number of new junior and intermediate players this year and all took part in the early rounds of the Club Championships. Considerable talent and much enthusiasm was shown, and all were a credit to their coaches, Godwin Johnson and his staff.
After some early morning drizzle had cleared away, finals day for Beaconsfield LTC turned out rather well – a good day for Pimms and a barbecue with a background of good tennis. We were very fortunate to have Keith Dewick of the Bucks LTA to present the prizes. In the blue ribbon events, Andrew Johnson, back from the second year of a tennis scholarship in the USA, had too much power for Matthew Fairbairn as he retained the men’s single title in a repeat of last year’s final. In the ladies event, after a closely fought match, Deirdre Cope came through 7-5 in the third set to reverse the result of last year’s final against Alison Clifford-King. All the other senior finals produced new winners – Andrew Johnson and Josh Blattner taking the men’s doubles in a hard-hitting final against Matthew Fairbairn and Steven Mortimer; Emily Martin and her mother, Jackie taking the ladies doubles; Sekhar Pilai and Anna Taylor the veterans mixed, and in an epic match, Josh Blattner and Rachel Doyle outlasted multiple previous winners Andrew Hales and Deirdre Cope to win the mixed doubles at 10-8 in the third set. All of the intermediates and juniors whether they won or lost enjoyed the day. They played well and fairly and did credit to themselves and club and made their friends and families watching very proud of them. To complete the prize giving, the Howard Naish trophy for the most successful player on the day was won by Bethany Fairbairn, and Godwin Johnson presented the trophy for the most improved player to Jackie Martin.
