Chengelo school in Zambia - Charity tournament

posted 13 Oct 2011 08:35 by Kristian Merritt

On Sept 25th a number of BTC members took part in a charity tournament to raise money for the Chengelo school in Zambia.

The initial rounds were played on 4 courts at various homes around the town and the semis and final were then played at Robin and Flora Pedler's court on Grove Road. The tournament was eventually won by our members Kristian Merritt and Jackie Martin and an enjoyable day was topped off with a tasty barbecue.

Many thanks to all those who took part and everyone who helped out with the organisation.

Bill's BBQ tournament now Friday 1st July 10.00am

posted 13 Jun 2011 07:57 by Kristian Merritt

As so many of you could not make it on the 3rd of June we have rearranged the date to hopefully accommodate everyone who wishes to participate in the tennis BBQ of the year (hmmm – apart from Mens' night perhaps?).

Put into practice your newly learnt skills from attending/watching Wimbledon, Gorge on spicy Cajun sausages from a southern Carolina recipe, delicious New Zealand lamb shoulder steaks soaked in a Victorian garden mint marinade, and succulent local boned chicken thighs coated in a mustard soy honey glaze ( stop dribbling ). Vegetarians are not forgotten tempted with a special Greek BBQ treat ( just ask Eva ). Last but by no means least relax those sore muscles from all the exertions with a glass or two of Spanish wines from Bill's cellar.

So what's stopping you. Get down to the clubhouse notice board and put your name down or alternatively call Bill on 07778361987 and book in.

The more, the merrier!

NB. If that's not enough to tempt you we are ecoli safe with no bean sprouts in the salads.

BTC's Road To Wimbledon Champions...

posted 7 Jun 2011 12:05 by Kristian Merritt

CONGRATULATIONS
To Will Taylor and Anna Carter Roberts for winning the Club stage of the HSBC Road to Wimbledon National 14 and under Challenge 2011.

The HSBC Road To Wimbledon 14 & Under National Challenge, now in its tenth year, is the largest junior lawn tennis event in the UK.

This year there were 29 boys and 22 girls in the draws, a club record. For many it was their first experience of competitive play and we hope that each and every player enjoyed their matches.

The boys final was battled between Will Taylor and Andrew Burnett, Will winning through 2-4,4-2 and 10-6 in the championship tie break. The girls final, played in the rain was between doubles partners, Anna Carter-Roberts and Alex Crowther. They played well in the conditions, Anna coming through 4-1, 5-3.

Anna will now represent the Club at the County Finals on the weekend of the 18/19 June at the Bucks Indoor Centre in High Wycombe. Neither Will or Andrew are able to attend as they are away on a school trip so Elliott Hudson has been invited to play. The winners of the County finals qualify for the National Finals, held on the grass courts of the All England Club Wimbledon on 15-20 August 2011.

We wish Elliott and Anna all the best during the County Finals.

BTC nominate Godwin to carry the 2012 torch

posted 29 May 2011 09:07 by Kristian Merritt   [ updated 4 Jun 2011 08:57 by Kristian Merritt ]

The search....
Do you know someone who is truly inspirational? Someone who always strives to do their best?
  • Has inspired you to do something you never thought possible?
  • Always tries to be the best they can be?
  • Makes a real difference in their school or local community?
  • Has shown what it means to be a real friend?
  • Shows respect for other people and knows the importance of fair play?
We’re looking for truly incredible individuals whose personal stories will inspire millions of people watching the Olympic Torch Relay – in their community, across the UK and around the world.

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. From any walk of life, anywhere in the UK.
We need you to help us find them.
BTC's 150 word nomination for Godwin to carry the 2012 Olympic Torch
Written by Niki Doyle, approved by the committee and submitted on behalf of BTC.

Passion, commitment, fun, dedication, just a few of things that Godwin has brought to the sport of tennis in our town.  For more than twenty years he has been our torch bearer for tennis, fair play, junior development and community spirit in Beaconsfield.

Single-handedly turning a small tennis school into a proud academy that has produced countless county stars and hundreds of social players that have continued to play into adulthood spreading his tennis legacy throughout the UK and abroad.

Godwin is more than a tennis coach, he is a role model and an inspiration to everyone who meets him.  His enthusiasm for the sport he loves is infectious, his drive to get the best out of every pupil is unstoppable.

Godwin truly is an ambassador for tennis, for Beaconsfield and for Britain and we can’t think of a more deserving person to carry the 2012 torch.

Beaconsfield School of Lawn Tennis celebrates 50 years

posted 27 May 2011 05:19 by Kristian Merritt

Written by Robert McGowan
In the year that President Kennedy was inaugurated,Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space and the Berlin Wall was built, Beaconsfield School of Lawn Tennis opened for business. The founder, Sue Livingston, was a tennis pioneer of her day, and sought to introduce new ideas into UK tennis coaching that she had learned while on her travels, in particular to Australia, which throughout the 1950's and 1960's was the global powerhouse of World tennis. Apart from matters of tennis technique and matchplay, these ideas also included complementary fitness coaching.

So what was tennis like in 1961. For a start, everyone used wooden racquets, tennis balls were white, backhands were single handed, tennis was an amateur sport, many British tennis clubs still had grass and shale (similar to clay) courts, a good house in Beaconsfield cost around £5,000, and television was black and white. British tennis, though at that time some would say a very elitist sport, did at least have some decent players, with four men through to the last 16 at Wimbledon, and an all British ladies final. British players knocked out the top seed in both the men's and ladies singles – I wonder if that has ever happened since? I was aged 10 at the time, already mad keen on tennis, and I do remember watching Bobby Wilson of Britain beating the men's number 1 and defending champion, Neale Fraser. After losing the opening set 6-1, I really could not believe my eyes when Wilson won the next set 6-0, and then two much longer sets to win the match – he lost in the next round. I did not watch the ladies final, being on a Sunday School outing to the Hell Fire Caves at West Wycombe, but I do recall hearing the end of it on somebody's transistor radio as we played in the fields above.

Sue Livingston built up BSLT over the next twenty years introducing tennis coaching for the children and townsfolk of Beaconsfield, while many county and some national players learnt their trade with her. Godwin Johnson himself attended the School in 1979, sponsored by the Nigerian tennis association, on his way to a tennis scholarship at university in the USA. Having completed his degree course and playing Davis Cup for Nigeria, Godwin gained a number of coaching qualifications before returning to help run BSLT in 1989, taking over ownership in 1992.

Since that time, BSLT has continued to flourish with courses developed for the absolute beginner through to top quality juniors and adults. Godwin has helped a number of young players achieve sports scholarships, the most recent being Andrew Johnson who is rapidly approaching the end of his first degree course in Florida. Andrew says:

“BSLT and Godwin Johnson's influence as my tennis coach have undoubtedly had a positive impact on my life. Rather than studying in the UK, I sought a tennis scholarship in the USA in addition to furthering my education. Four years on, I have no regrets and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience involved in obtaining a degree and playing tennis at Rollins College in Florida. It is an experience that would have been unattainable without Godwin and BSLT and one which I would encourage to any prospective juniors.”

Now in 2011, and fifty years later, BSLT is in a further period of change as it seeks to build on the acquisition of Beaconsfield LTC. Over the next few years, it is Godwin's ambition to improve the overall tennis experience at the Oval which will be to the benefit of the whole tennis playing community.

We wish Godwin and BSLT well as it develops further over the next 50 years.

Coaching Tip - May 2011

posted 19 May 2011 06:58 by Kristian Merritt

This month's coaching tip is...
Dear members,

Split step is one of the most understated, under taught movement in tennis at club level.  (video for those who read to the bottom)

First of all, what is the splitstep?
A split step is a little hop on both feet spread about shoulder width apart.

When should it be done?
It should be done just before the opponent hits the ball. You must not do it too long before the opponents contact point otherwise you will lose momentum and slow you down; you must never do it after the opponent hits the ball. If you do it after the opponent hits the ball, it is more destructive than helpful to your rhythm.

And how it affects your game?
It helps your game in many ways. One, it enables you to change direction much quicker because your weight will be evenly distributed on both legs which means you can go right, left, forward and back much quicker. Secondly, it helps you improve your concentration because in order for you to do it properly, you will be focussing on the ball and your opponent’s contact point. Thirdly, it helps you make the transition from the baseline game to the volley game, basically after you hit a groundstroke and you move into the net, you do split step before you go into your volley, it identifies the junction between the two.

Right now at club level, I would be surprised if 2% of people actually do it, so that means 98% of you don’t do it or feel it is not important. If you don’t think it is important, you will be playing tennis as badly as I speak English. Because growing up in Nigeria, when I was learning to speak and write English, I did not think punctuation was important because they were not in the alphabet, so it would be a bit like you writing a sentence without a fullstop or comma. Yes you can play reasonable tennis without it, but you will not be playing to your full potential.

Now watch Matt and Josh demonstrate in a 2min highlight video of the match against Chesham Bois yesterday - volume up! http://youtu.be/B2O2vCxVMhQ

Your coach,
Godwin Johnson
